J. Smith Group LLC was established (est. 1984) in Nashville, TN from its original form Home Roofing Co Inc. (HoRoCo) 4th Generation Roofing Company (est. 1948) Inc. Originally, our focus was primarily concentrated on the science and application of commercial roofing & Sheet Metal Contractors from built up roofs to single ply systems. In the process of our work, we increasingly encountered building failures resulting from components other than roofing. Over time and thousands of Roofs later our investigations allowed us to evaluate products and construction techniques and determine what worked and what didn’t. As a result of this experience, we have become knowledgeable in all aspects of the building facilities envelope. This allows us to provide complete facilities envelope services in house without the need for outside services. Because J. Smith Group is licensed as a Roofing Exterior facilities Consultants Firm, we are able to provide design/testing services (including necessary calculations and Architectural and Engineering judgments) that may not be provided in house by unlicensed consultants. John, Studied Architectural Engineering at Middle Tennessee State University in Construction Management and Corporate Business Law Degree. He interned in College with Fluor Daniel Corporation at the first US venture for Nissan Motor Manufacturing Corporation in Smyrna Tn Nissan Truck Facility. John being a third generation roofer Afterwards in 1982 he joined one of the largest Southern 40yr old year (Home Roofing and Building Co Inc.) his Family Owned Commercial Roofing Construction Company as Project Manager Chief Estimator and eventually taking over as Company Co-Owner and President CEO his Projects list is extensive with clients such as Gaylord Opryland Hotel (Marriott International) and Resort, The Grand Ole Opry house, Vanderbilt University, Nissan Motors Truck Assembly Plant USA, Nashville Metropolitan International Airport Authorities and State of Tennessee and the First Firestone EPDM Roof System in the State of Tennessee for the State of Tennessee. In 2000 HRC was bought out after 60 yrs of Service. In 2001 he helped guide PMUSA Phillip Morris in Richmond VA thru there Building Management Program and Automated Facility completion. In 2004 he was brought in to Target Corporation as Principal Building Scientist and Senior Project Manager Technical Specialist overseeing all 1000 plus East Coast Target Stores with over 8 billion square feet of roof area and over 40 million square feet of exterior walls and all (DC) Distribution Centers on the East Coast including Target first ever (FDC) Food Distribution Center over 1 million Square Feet with over 2 Million Square feet of Freezer and Cooler Roofs. In 2013 he retired from Target Corporation which was short lived in late 2013 J. Smith Group which he formed in 1990 he assumed CEO role and Principal Building Scientist with such clients as District of Columbia Washington, DC - Public School System - Boeing Aerospace Arlington, VA- Dept. of Defense, GSA, Corp of Engineers And the National Guard to name a few. Today we are still building on the same principles as when I started with HRC dedication and superior service all within a reasonable cost and personal service. He is a former NRCA Member and Committee Member.
